1st news letter European Feminist Forum

Please, forward this newsletter to your network. Our apologies if you´ve received this newsletter
already.

Have we met?
My name is Chantal van den Berg. I joined the European Feminist Forum team two
months ago, as general coordinator. Being a Human Rights scholar and activist I
am very excited about the space that the Forum offers to the European women´s
organizations. A new way of thinking about feminist movement will develop and I am
proud to be part of this innovative endeavour.

What is the European Feminist Forum?
For those who have not heard of the European Feminist Forum before; the
European Feminist Forum is about building an open and diverse dialogue,
organizing an energetic space for feminists in Europe to come together, and setting
a renewed collective feminist
agenda. The European Feminist Forum process will initially take place through our
website and conclude with a conference in Poland, on 13-15 June 2008, where a
new Euorpean feminist agenda will be drawn up!

What´s happening?
The European Feminist Forum Steering Committee is on the verge of taking the
next big steps in the organizing process. Two developments I want to mention here:
the appointment of the Host Organization for the EFF conference in June 2008 and
the upcoming launch of European Feminist Forum website.

Appointment of the Host Organization
Two Polish feminist organizations have supplied their bid letter to become the Host
Organization of the EFF conference in 2008. The organizations show a tremendous
willingness to shoulder an ambitious activity. The results will benefit women
throughout Europe, so the effort will be well worth the outcome.
The Steering Committee, which has developed a transparent instrument for making
the decision has the difficult task to choose from two great candidates at its
monthly meeting on March 8th.
We´ll keep you up to date on these developments!

The European Feminist Forum website
Another important step is the upcoming launch of the website. You will soon be able
to visit and join the European Feminist Forum online! We were lucky to find two top-
notch women to build the site for us. One of the world´s leading Spip specialists,
Perline Noisette is putting the site together using the latest network technology.
Both Perline and Joelle Palmieri, an experienced communication advisor, are
finalizing the website as you read this newsletter.

What´s happening with the Affinity Groups?
Every day we receive materials for the website, in which the Affinity Groups
introduce themselves, propose a debate, show their activities and invite others to
cooperate with them. The European Feminist Forum secretariat even enjoyed the
visit of several affinity group leaders.
This is the beginning of a beautiful affinity!

Statistics
11 Affinity Groups have finalized the Service Agreement (contracts) with the
European Feminist Forum secretariat, 6 more contracts are being finalized, 4
Affinity Groups need more time, 2 groups merged, 3 dropped out,
Not all crucial issues are covered at this point by an Affinity Group. For those topics,
which include sexual and reproductive health and rights and LGBTI, we have asked
some prominent feminists to write a discussion paper triggering a debate.

Staff
Persons having a pleasure to work with Affinity Groups are:
Gisela Dütting - Affinity Groups coordinator
Gisela is a feminist activist and economic researcher from Amsterdam, The
Netherlands.
Joanna Semeniuk - Affinity Groups assistant
Joanna is from Wroclaw, Poland. Currently writing her MA thesis in Philosophy on
radical democracy and feminism.
Erin Burrows - Affinity Groups volunteer
Erin is a young feminist leader and activist. She studies Gender, Politics and
Women's History in New York, U.S.

The Debate
As soon as the Affinity Groups are visible on the European Feminist Forum website,
the groups, the secretariat and Steering Committee will join efforts to develop a
broad and daring discussions. The European Feminist Forum´s goal is to include all
relevant players in each debated field and to link people who would previously not
have been linked. An effect is going to be an established basis of a new and rich
cooperation, across disciplines and across professions and across activisms. What
European Feminist Forum offers to the Affinity Groups and all feminists involved in
the debate, is the European context, European networking, and broad attention.

Get involved!
There are 3 ways to be involved when the website is up and running:
1. by joining an Affinity Group
2. by taking part in the general discussions on the website forum (cross topic)
3. by taking part in the different debating platforms that the Affinity Groups will set
up to discuss with a broader audience (e.g. thematic forum, a live chat during a
certain period, reacting to e-mails, etc)
