Professor of Orthopaedic Technologies in Aging

The Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering at ETH Zurich (D-MAVT) invites applications for a Professorship in Orthopaedic Technologies in Aging. The professorship, which is established jointly with the Schulthess Clinic in Zurich, will tackle the most burning issues related to the aging human movement system using a translational approach to be applied between the technology-driven department at D-MAVT and an orthopaedic hospital.
The successful candidate is expected to establish an interdisciplinary research group focused on the development of technologies that will provide an insight into joint and tissue biomechanics, and movement and loading patterns. The technologies will be aimed at the development of intelligent implants, and the improvement of implant anchorage, surgical techniques and rehabilitation programs for aged patients. The candidate should have a proven track record in basic orthopaedic sciences and engineering and the ability to translate such findings into technology that can be tested in vitro and in vivo.
Additional prerequisites are a strong motivation and an undisputable commitment to undergraduate and graduate student education. The professorship will be embedded in the Department's undergraduate and graduate program in Medical Engineering and Health, the joint Master's program in Biomedical Engineering, and the new program in Health Science and Technology. Furthermore, teaching activities that are clearly aimed at bridging the fields of engineering and orthopaedic science are expected. The professor will be expected to teach undergraduate level courses (in German or English) and graduate level courses (in English).

The candidate should demonstrate a strong background in orthopaedic engineering and science as well as an excellent research record for age-related problems of the musculoskeletal system. Candidates with dual approbation are equally encouraged to apply for the position in an effort to better facilitate interaction and cooperation with the medical practitioners in the hospital environment. The candidate should provide evidence of his/her involvement in translational research with academic and industrial partners.

Please submit your application together with a curriculum vitae and a list of refereed publications to the President of ETH Zurich, Prof. Dr. R. Eichler, ETH Zurich, Raemistrasse 101, 8092 Zurich, Switzerland (or via e-mail to faculty-recruiting at sl.ethz.ch), no later than March 31, 2010. With a view toward increasing the number of female professors, ETH Zurich specifically encourages qualified female candidates to apply.
