Professor of Stochastic Systems (Theory)

The Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering (www.bsse.ethz.ch) at ETH Zurich invites applications for an outstanding candidate in Stochastic Systems (Theory) who will develop a strong and visible research program in the area of stochastic systems for the analysis and design of biological systems. Research topics include but are not limited to mathematical / computational methods for probabilistic modeling and stochastic simulation of biological systems, for systems identification and experimental design, and for rational engineering of novel biological functions that are robust to or exploit stochastic phenomena.

D-BSSE of ETH Zurich is located in Basel, the heart of the BioValley area providing excellent opportunities for collaboration within this strong life science research community at the academic, clinical, and pharmaceutical level.

Candidates should have a Ph.D. degree in Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Science, or related disciplines, and an excellent track record in development of stochastic systems methods and their application to biological systems. The ideal applicant should have demonstrated success in obtaining support for independent research projects and a strong publication record reflecting innovative, interdisciplinary, and collaborative approaches to important problems in biology or medicine. Commitment to teaching and the demonstrated ability to lead a research group are expected. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate level courses (German or English) and graduate level courses (English). The position will be filled either at the associate or the full professor level, depending on the candidate's age and qualification.

Please submit your application together with a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, and statements on future teaching and research activities to the President of ETH Zurich, Prof. Dr. Ralph Eichler, Raemistrasse 101, 8092 Zurich, Switzerland (or via e-mail to faculty-re-cruiting at sl.ethz.ch), no later than July 31, 2010. When applying electronically, do only send one PDF file. With a view towards increasing the number of female professors, ETH specifically encourages qualified female candidates to apply.
