Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) of Cartilage Engineering and Regeneration

The future Department for Health Sciences and Technology at ETH Zurich invites applications for the above mentioned position. The new professor is expected to bridge the gap between the fundamental biosciences and clinical applications by working out an outstanding research program, developing innovative methods that promote cartilage regeneration. Key components of this research program could center around the development of new insights into the molecular structure of cartilage matrix proteins, cartilage signaling, mechanobiological aspects, mechanisms regulating cartilage metabolism, as well as repair and regeneration mechanisms. These insights would be utilized to define novel tissue engineering strategies to replace or regenerate cartilage (both articular and septal) and joint tissues (i.e. meniscus and synovium) that interact with cartilage. The primary criterion is either demonstrated or potential excellence in research and technology developments, rather than on one particular scientific aspect. The professorship comes with generous resources, including start-up funds and annual allocations, to establish a significant research program. Close collaboration with researchers at ETH Zurich, the FIFA Medical Assessment Research Center/Schulthess Clinic and University Hospital Zurich are envisioned, thereby complementing already existing efforts.

The candidate will contribute to the interdisciplinary education programs offered at ETH Zurich; this includes the ETH Health Sciences and Technology Bachelor and Master Program, and the ETH Master Program in Biomedical Engineering. The new professor will be expected to teach undergraduate level courses (German or English) and graduate level courses (English). The candidate's educational program will support a vital link between biological and physical scientists and engineers and clinical professionals.

Assistant professorships have been established to promote the careers of younger scientists. The initial appointment is for four years with the possibility of renewal for an additional two-year period and promotion to a permanent position.

Please submit your application together with a curriculum vitae, a list of publications and a brief statement of present and future research interests to the President of ETH Zurich, Prof. Dr. Ralph Eichler, ETH Zurich, Raemistrasse 101, 8092 Zurich, Switzerland (or via e-mail as one single PDF to faculty-recruiting at sl.ethz.ch), no later than January 31, 2011. With a view towards increasing the number of female professors, ETH Zurich specifically encourages qualified female candidates to apply.
