Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) of Reliability and Risk Engineering

The Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering (www.mavt.ethz.ch) at ETH Zurich invites applications for the above-mentioned position.

The outstanding candidate should create an exceptional research program aiming at the development of innovative techniques and tools suitable for analyzing and simulating failure behavior of engineered complex systems as a whole - with the estimation of their reliability, vulnerability and risk as defining quantities. Possible focus could be on highly integrated energy supply, energy supply with high penetrations of renewable energy sources, transport, manufacturing, communication or other networked systems.

Teaching duties include contributions to the Department's graduate programs including the ETHZ/EPFL Master in Nuclear Engineering. The courses (in English) are to embrace basic concepts and theories for reliability and risk analysis and dedicated methods of systems engineering as well as highly advanced methods for complex systems modeling and simulation; their application to concrete problems and system integration is highly appreciated.

Apart from a university education (PhD) in Engineering Sciences or Applied Mathematics the successful candidate must have an excellent track record in research and teaching in the above mentioned field and a sound technology background. Furthermore, willingness and ability to collaborate with colleagues in and outside of ETH Zurich (ETH Energy Science Center and ETH Risk Center) as well as with industry and public sector are essential.

Please apply online at www.facultyaffairs.ethz.ch. Your application should include your curriculum vitae and a list of refereed publications. The letter of application should be addressed to the President of ETH Zurich, Prof. Dr. Ralph Eichler. The closing date for applications is 31 January 2012. With a view towards increasing the number of women in leading academic positions, ETH Zurich specifically encourages women to apply.
