An important new study (attached) documents that female animals and cells are rarely used in surgical research. As a result, five major surgery journals are implementing new guidelines requiring authors to report the sex of animals and cells: Annals of Surgery, American Journal of Surgery, JAMA Surgery, Journal of Surgical Research, and Surgery. The study is by Dustin Y. Yoon, MD, MS, Neel A. Mansukhani, MD, Vanessa C. Stubbs, MD, Irene B. Helenowski, PhD, Teresa K. Woodruff, PhD, and Melina R. Kibbe, MD. Congratulations on great work! They also have important recommendations at the end of their article.

A second article attached discusses sex in cells and (among other things) lists the sex of cell lines commonly used in AJP-Cell Physiology. The authors (Kalpit Shah, Charles McCormack, and Neil Bradbury) make the important point that US IRB restrictions "preclude immediate knowledge of the sex of the patients when cells are derived from human tissues." This may be a road block that could be changed (while still protecting the identity of the human subject).

The Gendered Innovations project is holding a workshop at Stanford University September 19 on sex and gender in research design for animal research.

US NIH is hold a Method and Techniques workshop on "Integrating the Biological Variable 'Sex' into Research" in October.
All best, Londa
