Professor of Climate Impacts in Mountain Regions

The Department of Environmental Systems Science (www.usys.ethz.ch) at ETH Zurich and the Swiss Federal Research Institute WSL (www.wsl.ch) invite applications for the above-mentioned position to establish a research group on Climate Impacts in Mountain Regions. The joint position will be affiliated with the WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research in Davos (Canton Grisons) and ETH Zurich.

Candidates should have an excellent international track record in research, be interested in both disciplinary as well as system-oriented multidisciplinary research, and be able to effectively lead a research team. Applicants are expected to have a background in the use and application of weather and climate model output, with strong expertise and experience in the application in Alpine regions. Process models and data analysis techniques shall be used to characterize, diagnose, and project impacts of extreme events and climate change on natural systems and subsequent hazardous processes and risks. The combination of models and observations, or applications of data assimilation techniques, should be part of the portfolio of the applicants. The successful candidate is encouraged to contribute to field measurement campaigns together with groups at WSL/SLF to support model development and validation. Topics of interest for the professorship include impacts on mountain ecosystems through processes associated with hazards such as droughts, storms, floods, and mass movements. Research conducted by the candidate should be relevant for mountain regions overall, but with a focus on the Alps. In general, at ETH Zurich undergraduate level courses are taught in German or English and graduate level courses are taught in English.
