Spend USD 15 on this board
https://www.olimex.com/Products/Duino/PIC32/PIC32-PINGUINO-MX220/
and concentrate on the software plus addons.

Possibly for sale here: http://nl.mouser.com/olimex/

Futurlec, Olimex, make populated boardas at prices for which we cannot
even collect the parts.

Here http://fruttenboel.verhoeven272.nl/soap/index.html I learned that
even for such a simple project it is quite problematic to have untested
hardware while testing the software. Was this a software error? Or a HW
design error?
For a micro controller project things get a million times more hairy.
