If the filter appends "." an omits <CR> <LF> there is still a 
line break between "." and "From " in MailMessages.  As if 
getmail automatically appends <CR> <LF> after invoking the 
external filter.  I don't claim to understand the details but 
a filter appending just "." seems to work.

Also, I haven't fathomed why Oberon includes the "." rather 
than stick to the established mboxrd format.

Also, getmail can operate with TLS.
