Depends on the context and your objective.  My earlier answer 
wasn't complete.  A non-partitioned store doesn't have an MBR 
but can be bootable.  

If a partitioned store has a boot manager working and an OS is 
being installed to an unused part, the configuration of the boot 
manager might need adjustment but the MBR shouldn't change.

If you are making a complete new multi-boot setup on a store, 
then something should be written to the MBR.  Otherwise use 
a boot diskette or something more arcane.
