What happened about the <archives> that P. Muller wrote about?

As the old stuff dies we are left with garbage like this gmailer:
 after I enter the subject, I <enter> by reflex,
and it loses all my work and tries to go on-line.

Every thing it hands you is like a predefined government-form.
You can't change  any To: Cc: Bc: without going on-line to
get new forms.
