There’s a standard workaround: the CTRL key.

A standard USB scroll wheel mouse does have a middle button built into the wheel.  The System 3 distro for Windows recognizes that button.

There are still lots of 3-button PS/2 mice available secondhand and surplus.

Because most “real” systems don’t have a middle button.
