If you had studied CS at ETH in the 1980s and 1990s that’s (practically) all you
would have ever seen during (at least) the first year of the CS curriculum ;-)

It’s called "Dijkstra’s notation” - named after the late Edsger W. Dijkstra, who
was (of course) a regular guest at ETH. We were made to read all his books
and learn his “discipline” in a rather rigorous manner, to say the least..

He helped establish the notion of (structured) programming as a scientific
discipline, among many, many other important contributions.. today’s
generation of CS students should at least learn something about the
rather important pioneering years of CS. It’s like any history student
should know at least who the Romans were..
