Hi Zeus,
It's definitely an idea that has come up. Some of the pieces needed
have been looked at, but we've never built a complete system (or
solved all the problems).
Two projects which were inspired by the idea are up on the web site:
- Alexander Grest. A Routing and Forwarding Subsystem for a Multicore
Operating System. Bachelor's thesis, ETH Zurich, August 2011.
[ Multihop message passing ]
- Jonas Hauenstein, David Gerhard, Gerd Zellweger. Ethernet Message
Passing for Barrelfish. Distributed Systems Lab, ETH Zurich, July
2011.
[ A tunnelling interconnect driver over Ethernet between two
machines ]
If you're interested in looking more at this, we should talk!
Best,
