<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Courier New"">operating systems, language runtimes and virtual machines. As the<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Courier New"">layer between application software and the underlying hardware,<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Courier New"">systems-level software must directly tackle the challenges of
<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Courier New"">multi-core hardware (e.g., scalability, concurrency control and
<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Courier New"">data-sharing costs), while providing appropriate abstractions to<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Courier New"">higher-level software. Future hardware is likely to increase the<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Courier New"">challenges encountered by systems software due to increasing
<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Courier New"">system diversity, core heterogeneity, complex memory hierarchies,<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Courier New"">dynamic core failure, and non-cache coherent shared memory.
<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Courier New"">However, the abundance of parallelism and potential for core
<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Courier New"">specialization and inter-core message passing hardware also
