Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

We are pleased to announce to you the official opening for online registration and abstract submission of the following event:

PhD symposium 2011, Students at the Scientific Frontier
Empa, St.Gallen (CH), 18th October 2011

Guest Speech by Dr. J. Georg Bednorz,
Nobel Prize Laureate in Physics



*         Online registration is open and required for all the participants on www.empa.ch/phd-symposium<http://www.empa.ch/phd-symposium>. (Deadline: 31st of August, 2011).


*         Abstract submission is open and has to follow the formal requirements of the presentations presented in the attached flyer and the abstract template available on www.empa.ch/phd-symposium<http://www.empa.ch/phd-symposium>.
Abstracts have to be sent at phd-symposium at empa.ch<mailto:phd-symposium at empa.ch> before the 15th of July, 2011. After this date, abstracts will not be considered.

Please find in the attached flyer all the necessary information about the event.


As a reminder:

The one-day conference features an ideal mix of scientific sessions, social events and industry exhibitions. The PhD symposium creates a platform for the exchange of the latest research among all PhD students. Therefore, all participating PhD students are encouraged to present their scientific work in either oral or poster presentations.

The symposium covers a wide range of topics related to materials science and engineering, which reflects the research focus of Empa. The topics are:
_ Nanostructured Materials
_ Sustainable Built Environment
_ Health and Performance
_ Natural Resources and Pollutants
_ Materials for Energy Technologies

Oral and poster presentations will be judged by a panel of experts from variety of scientific disciplines. The evaluation will be based on the coherence and clarity of the presentation as well as the speaker's performance. The event is entirely sponsored by Empa and industrial partners, thus free of charge.
