If you're interested in Active Oberon and its runtime AOS, have a look at
- Active Oberon Language Report
- The Active Object System - Design and Multiprocessor implementation
 
Both documents can be found at http://www.bluebottle.ethz.ch/docu/technical.html
 
If you want technical background information about threads, look at operating system books. Typically, they also cover issues related to multi-programming as locking, deadlocks, etc.
