This project was not born recently.  It evolved over decades.
Try to see the universal, everlasting principles, rather than what
hardware is available today.
The highest/over-ruling principles are not technical, but rather
<human evolved>, eg. that
people don't want to see their effort needing to be discarded.
By recognising this, right from the days of DOS, M$ captured the
world-market -- for a
few decades.
