Yes, to teach programming.
But OberonStation seems to be an optimum hardware <type> teaching
example.
If you want to be a concert pianists, it needs more than the most cost
effective CDs or what ever they use today.
Hardware is a different story to software.
Up till recently ETHZ only exposed the <top level> of their software.
AFAIK know the <kernel> was hidden - copyright ?
Then a few years ago NW started playing with PICuproc code,
and perhaps realised that opening the whole project, from
current <ASIC-type-tools> up to the full software suite [including
compiler] would be a valuable teaching tool.

Including eg. USB would completely ruin the whole idea;
like having a diesel engine on your racing yacht ?
