Hi,

Just curious what is field instruments' connectivity, does it have to
really be tcp/ip?

Small inexpensive sensors may use nRF24L01, wireless module, very same
PO2013 boards were designed with. (similar to MySensors for Home
automation pushed by Arduino people)

There are quite a few full featured boards equipped with tcp/ip,
designed by h/w people in the know.

Hope they will comment soon.
