[Oberon] [allowed] Oberon system 3 runs on real Raspberry Pihardware

Thanks for the comments and suggestions, Rochus and Peter. Appreciated.

I had not been waiting long enough to see the mouse pointer on the console. It did indeed appear after about a minute or a minute and a half, but it does not respond to mouse movements, even after five minutes. I will go hunting in the junk room for old mice; I have at least a couple of wired mice with USB interface and one with PS/2 (but no longer any PS/2 computer); I should also have a Lenovo keyboard, possibly wired. I’ll try them.

One other oddity. Oberon doesn’t respond to the RPi keyboard either. With the keyboard plugged into the RPi 3B, the keyboard indicators (Caps Lock, Num Lock) don’t light, though they do work on another RPi 4 with Raspberry Pi OS (my Lyrion Music Server host; I use the Raspberry Pi keyboard and mouse sometimes to reconfigure it).

Best regards,

Gerard Lardner

Hi Gerard

I successfully tried with plain wired keyboard and mouse, and also different Lenovo trackpoint keyboards. I never tried with a wireless mouse or yet another USB hub. But even with my setup it usually takes 30 seconds until the Oberon system first detects the build-in hub in the raspberry pi 3b and then the USB devices connected to it. It might even take longer if there is yet another hub, or it might not work at all. You can see that the mouse was detected when the mouse cursor becomes visible. If that doesn't happen after 30-60 seconds, then you could read the console output using a TTL serial cable attached to the corresponding Pi ports. Or just use a conventional USB mouse with a wire. Hope this helps.

Best regards

Rochus Keller

Hi Rochus,

I am curious to try Oberon System 3 on a Raspberry Pi. It's a long, long

time since I worked on any serious programming, longest of all in any of

Wirth's languages. But Pascal (on a DECSystem 20) and later Turbo Pascal

were my first programming languages, closely followed by Modula-2.

I flashed an SD card for my RPi 3 Model B V1.2. It boots in about 3 sec but

it does not recognise the Raspberry Pi keyboard (USB connected) or mouse

(wireless to the USB hub in the keyboard). What type of keyboards and mice

are most likely to work with this port of Oberon System 3?

By the way, thank you very much for your efforts in porting this to RPi

hardware.

Kind regards,

Gerard Lardner

Hello everyone

In case you want to try the Oberon system on a real Raspberry Pi, here is an

image ready to flash on an SD card with instructions:

https://github.com/rochus-keller/OberonSystem3Native/releases/tag/2026-04-10

I did all debugging and testing on a Raspberry Pi model 3b (which is still

regularly available for purchase), but the image should also run on the Pi

Zero 2.

Best regards

Rochus Keller
