The Erna Hamburger distinguished lecture series features women in
science and engineering who have greatly influenced and shaped their
respective fields and environments and who have earned the highest
respect from their peers. The EPFL-WISH (Women in Science and
Humanities) Foundation invites such distinguished personalities to
acknowledge their accomplishments and with the hope that they inspire
future generations of researchers.

The lectures are geared to the general public. Everyone is welcome to
attend. The events are FREE, but REGISTRATION is recommended to help
with planning.

Frances E. Allen | Laureate of the 2008 Erna Hamburger Prize
Frances E. Allen joined IBM Research as a programmer in 1957 with a
University of Michigan master's degree in mathematics. During her career
at IBM, she worked on algorithms that enable both programmer
productivity and program performance in the development of computer
applications. In 1989, she was named the first woman IBM Fellow Emerita.
In 2006, Frances Allen received the ACM Turing Award for her pioneering
contributions to the theory and practice of optimizing compiler
techniques. Given since 1966 and considered as the Nobel Prize in
computer science, this award recognizes individuals who have made
significant and lasting contributions to the domain. Frances Allen is
the only woman recipient. She is also an active mentor and advocate for
technical women in computing, which is reflected in the «Frances E.
Allen Women in Technology Mentoring Award», established by IBM in 2000.
