Professor of Physics and Reliability of Wood and Wood Composites

The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology invites applications for a professorship of Physics and Reliability of Wood and Wood Composites. The position concerns the use of naturally grown wood as building material. Focus is placed on the relationship between wood, humidity, adhesive and impregnation, as well as on the connection between microstructure and physical and mechanical properties and their behavior in practical application. The candidate will also be expected to improve and integrate the understanding of the mechanics of deformation and fracture of wood and wood composite materials and of the long-term durability of civil engineering structures. The position also involves the elaboration of fundamental material science for the development and application of methods for the maintenance and restoration of engineering structures. Research experience in using nanoparticles, modification technologies, and adaptive material behavior to improve the performance of wood and wood composites is also welcome.
The teaching responsibilities of the Chair within the Department for Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering (D-BAUG) include fundamental material science with the aim of conveying an understanding of wood including hardwood and wood composites in connection with the construction, use, and maintenance of civil engineering structures, covering technical, economical, and ecological aspects. In addition, the candidate will lead a research group at Empa (Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology). He or she should hold a PhD in a relevant field, an excellent academic record as well as extensive experience in wood and wood composites and must demonstrate an ability to carry out research (PhD) and divulge results through teaching and practice, thanks to his/her knowledge and experience in fundamental material science. Prerequisites will be the ability and readiness to work in an interdisciplinary environment as well as a pedagogical predisposition and pleasure in teaching. The successful candidate will be a professorial member of the Department of D-BAUG. The new professor will be expected to teach undergraduate level courses (German or English) and graduate level courses (English).

Please submit your application together with a curriculum vitae and a list of publications and projects to the President of ETH Zurich, Prof. Dr. R. Eichler, ETH Zurich, Raemistrasse 101, 8092 Zurich, Switzerland (or via e-mail to faculty-recruiting at sl.ethz.ch), no later than August 31, 2010. With a view towards increasing the number of female professors, ETH Zurich specifically encourages qualified female candidates to apply.
