Professor of Animal Physiology

The Institute of Agricultural Sciences (www.ias.ethz.ch) of the Department of Environmental Systems Science (www.usys.ethz.ch) at ETH Zurich invites applications for a Professorship in Animal Physiology. The new Professor will be responsible for developing a leading research and teaching program in physiology of livestock species oriented around understanding metabolic function and control mechanisms. The approach should be integrative, encompassing genetic, molecular, cellular and organismal levels with a goal of improving the efficiency of nutrient utilisation.

The Professorship's primary research topics might include: characterizing interactions among metabolic pathways and the underlying mechanisms (metabolomics concept) as well as their regulation by genetic and environmental factors; exploring metabolic adaptive capabilities and limitations, stress responses and coping mechanisms that affect adaptation of high genetic merit animals as well as animals exposed to harsh environments, including different climate change scenarios; relating metabolic processes to the regulation of energy and protein utilization as well as metabolic partitioning (including research in energy homeostasis).

Following the World Food System focus of the Department, the Professorship is expected to express a global view of the problems coming along with food scarcity and climate change and to help in developing solutions. The new Professor will be able to hire several staff and will have access to state of the art experimental and analytical equipment. She or he will be expected to teach undergraduate level courses (in German or English) and graduate level courses (in English) covering both basic and advanced Animal Physiology.

Please apply online at www.facultyaffairs.ethz.ch. Your application should include your curriculum vitae, a list of publications, and a statement of your research and teaching interests. The letter of application should be addressed to the President of ETH Zurich, Prof. Dr. Ralph Eichler. The closing date for applications is 30 April 2012. ETH Zurich is an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer. In order to increase the number of women in leading academic positions, we specifically encourage women to apply. ETH Zurich is further responsive to the needs of dual career couples and qualifies as a family friendly employer.
