A European Conference

Women in Science: Mainstreaming Gender Equality in the European Research Area

Rome (Italy), University of Rome III, Aula Magna
December 3rd, 2003

Aim of the Conference
The Conference is one of the events included in the Programme of the
Italian Presidency of the European Union, which runs from July to December
2003.
The issue of women in science is at the core of the European Research Area.
The under representation of women in science is hindering the full
realisation of the ERA’s potential and the achievement of the Lisbon
objectives. The Conference aims at implementing the policy debate at
national, cross-national and European level. This aim should be reached by
addressing three main topics: the presence and role of women in science
(through a compared analysis of available statistics and appropriate
indicators), the identification of the know-how to form gender competencies
(in relation to both the promotion of specific new training areas and the
introduction of gender aspect within traditional disciplines), the
visibility of women researchers (women’s participation to scientific
information and public understanding of science, fostering a better and
tighter interaction between the media and female scientists). The final
point is the adoption of a conclusive paper identifying key issues and
policies, best practice and new tools as a contribute to the Helsinki Group
Work Plan in order to build a consensus for future action and initiatives.

Conference site
The conference will be held in Rome, at the University of Rome III, a
learning institution that supports the creation of a European dimension
within its teaching and research system.
The conference will bring together political decision-makers and
representatives of the scientific community, taking advantage of the
event’s incorporation in the official agenda of the Italian Presidency to
realize a high-profile awareness raising initiative.

Programme
December 3rd, 2003

08.30-09.00 Welcome and registration
09.00-09.30 Opening session Opening addresses
09.30-11.00 First Session: ”Producing gender equality in science measuring
inequalities”
The target is to outline concrete conditions and positive synergies
facilitating the adoption of gender-oriented policies through exchanging
experiences, comparing policy measures and available statistics,
implementing an appropriate set of gender indicators to monitor the
progress in the field of gender equality.
11.00-11.30 Coffee-break
11.30-13.30 Second Session: ”Promoting new competencies through gender
mainstreaming”
Specific gender research is needed. But gender invests also the
construction of scientific concepts and practices. This session of the
conference aims to discuss this topic and to compare different experiences.
It means developing and using expertise in gender mainstreaming, improving
the gender dimension of scientific projects, i. e. increasing the relevance
and the role of women’s and gender studies in a European high education
framework and raising public awareness of the potential for a gender
dimension to research. The objective of this session is identifying
proposals to implement at national levels an interdisciplinary European
framework for the making of gender and science.

13.30-15.00 Buffet Lunch
15.00-17.30 Third Session: Women’s in Science visibility: a challenge
This session has the objective to address the issue of the relationship
between women scientists and media. It involves the crucial point of
visibility and role models. The objective is to discuss and compare
experiences within specific media contexts, addressing the modalities of
women participation to scientific information and public understanding of
science, the contribution of media to a wider visibility of women
researchers and reflecting on how a better interaction between the two can
be encouraged. The task is to make proposals to build up journalists’
knowledge of women scientists so that they receive more exposure on the media.
