Professor of History of Urban Design

The Department of Architecture (www.arch.ethz.ch<http://www.arch.ethz.ch>) at ETH Zurich invites applications for the above-mentioned position.

The new professor is responsible for teaching theoretical foundations of the History of Urban Design and to introduce its major themes. He or she is to cover the History of Urban Design comprehensively and at the highest academic level, always bearing in mind the superordinate concerns of his or her employer, one of the world's leading schools of architecture.

The professor is to ensure that students not only acquire knowledge of the most important trajectories in the History of Urban Design but also an aptitude for dealing with the conceptual approaches and research methods common to all the humanities. He or she teaches the foundation course of the Bachelor program. In the Master program, specific research interests and contents gain importance. Close collaboration with the professors at the Institute for the History and Theory of Architecture (gta) and the Institute of Historic Building Research and Conservation (IDB) is of particular importance. The "Design with Integrated Disciplines" course demands a sound interest and experience in the field, as well as a willingness to cooperate with the various design professors in the Department of Architecture.

Substantial contributions to research into the History of Urban Design are required. The candidate's track record in research should ideally evince aspects of the History of Landscape, the History of Infrastructure and the related cultural sciences. A commitment to nurturing the research and interests of younger students and colleagues - in particular to the recruitment and supervision of doctoral candidates - is indispensable. Ideally, applicants should also assume some responsibility for the MAS History and Theory of Architecture.

Candidates should have a broad-ranging research background and the highest academic credentials. International experience is essential, as is the ability to defend a clear and independent academic position. Previously published scientific work of international relevance is expected of all candidates as well as a broad experience in tertiary-level teaching and the supervision of doctoral candidates and research teams. Skills in communicating academic issues to non-specialized audiences are beneficial.

Please apply only online at www.facultyaffairs.ethz.ch<http://www.facultyaffairs.ethz.ch>

Applications should include a curriculum vitae, a list of publications and projects, and a statement of future research and teaching interests. The letter of application should be addressed to the President of ETH Zurich, Prof. Dr. Lino Guzzella. The closing date for applications is 15 June 2016. ETH Zurich is an equal opportunity and family friendly employer and is further responsive to the needs of dual career couples. We specifically encourage women to apply.
