Assistant Professor of Virus-Host Interactions
The Department of Biology (www.biol.ethz.ch <http://www.biol.ethz.ch> ) at
ETH Zurich invites applications for the above-mentioned position.
The new professor will lead an independent, world-class research program in
the area of Virus-Host Interactions. Research areas include, but are not
limited to, the impact of viruses infecting bacteria, archaea or eukaryotes;
the biology of their hosts at the organismic, cellular, or molecular level,
or within microbial communities; the influence of persistent virus
infections on heterologous immune defense; the reciprocal interaction of
host endogenous retroviruses / retroelements with commensal bacteria; and/or
the identification, characterization and application of new viral defense
mechanisms or their applications in bioengineering.
The professorship will be embedded in the Institute of Microbiology (IMB)
and be fully integrated into its diverse, interactive, and collaborative
research environment. The position offers outstanding scientific
opportunities to participate in interdisciplinary research projects, and
includes membership in the National Centre of Competence Research (NCCR)
Microbiomes (https://nccr-microbiomes.ch). It will be part of the Life
Science Zurich Graduate School, a well-established platform for teaching and
research and with a network of research laboratories in the areas of
microbiology, immunology, virology and related disciplines. It will also
benefit from state-of-the-art technological platforms such as the Functional
Genomics Center Zurich, the Scientific Center for Optical and Electron
Microscopy, and from access to high-performance compute infrastructure and
IT Support (https://biol.ethz.ch/en/support-and-platforms.html).
The successful candidate is expected to demonstrate competitive acquisition
of third-party funding and to teach in BSc and MSc level courses as part of
the study curriculum of the Department of Biology.
The assistant professorship is limited to a maximum of 7 years and promotes
the establishment of an early career researcher.
