]Originally the CF was formatted in Linux.  Then the A2 installer
]set the type and formatted the part to AosFS.  When A2 was reinstalled,
]those steps weren't necessary.  Will format to ext2 again.

Start from the lowest-level:
=is the device there, or am I dreaming?
=is necessary power applied?
=does my test instrument behave OK on a standard device?

only further on do you ask the questions that you're asking.

IMO <unable to detect C/H/S> [as you reported IIRC], is at a lower/
more-fundamental level than ext3 or AosFS formatting, and must be solved first.
