Is e.g. Ubuntu a good choice?

This is a question prone to flame wars. :)

For Oberon (system or compilers) most packages are made against either Debian derivatives (e.g. Ubuntu, Mint) or Red Hat. However, there are many Linux distributions from Arch to Slackware, openSUSE to Fedora. Other than the big commercial three (RHEL, SLE, Ubuntu), it's really a matter of preference. With live media being so common, it is not difficult to test them out and see which looks good for you. See distrowatch.com for the common distributions.

So anyone answering that question honestly either answers with something like the above, or expresses their personal preference (Slackware, RHEL).
