How do you tell if a card is SDHC (high capacity) or regular SD. How do
you tell if it is up to 8GB supported only, or 32GB or 4GB, or 128GB.

Isn't this similar to the USB 1.1 vs 2.0 vs 3.0 issues. Maybe not as much
of a monster.

As for the finite life problem, and the wear down and lost of bits: this
is one reason I refuse to do paperless banking, and other fads. Data
becomes corrupt very easily unless you make careful backups, which is a
chore. Paper, generally does not corrupt, unless there is a fire, or juice
is spilled on the paper (real programmers don't drink coffee, I'm afraid).
