  many of your questions can be answered by looking at the Xilinx ISE materials. ISE is the previous version of Xilinx tools which is still very good and appropriate for Spartan-6 designs. I am not even sure if the new Xilinx tool named Vivado is good for Spartan-6. Anyway, here is the Answer Record from Xilinx where the ISE tutorials are pointed out:
