No, I think it's bit which sounds (a bit) rude in French.  Byte, I think,
is safe, and certainly isn't going away.

Octets got used a lot at one time (as has been said) for example to reduce
ambiguity in telecommunications standards.

Anyway, all this can be googled.  Is there a specific concern related to
Oberon or its documentation?  I'd be interested to know where octets might
have crept in ;-)
