Prof. Wirth designed the TRM processor for this purpose

which is used in ETH's Active Cells distributed processing model.

But the PIC gives you analog, and a complete offload processor, in a DIL 
package suitable for breadboarding, programable in a "Wirth" language, 
for less than a tenth of the price of a PMOD.
