Correct.  Definitely sporadic.

No systematic investigation yet.  

A simple observation is that my smarthost mail server is blacklisted 
occasionally.  I receive a bounce message mentioning blacklisting.  It 
must affect thousands of others along with me and clears automatically 
after a day or two.  The bounces from the gmail recipients don't 
mention blacklisting.

Appears that blacklisting can be a third party service whereas Gmail 
might operate blacklisting internally.

Recently only short messages.  Few of my messages are longer than the 
height of the screen.

A recent message had 5 or 6 recpients.  Two with gmail addresses gave 
the report described.

Not the recent ones.  The alternative I prefer is a file or files on a 
http server.

> - when you close and reopen A2 does the same email bounce again?

Haven't checked that.
