I believe Dan Parnete is using it commercially.
(Correct me if I'm wrong Dan).  I've recently
developed a survey program using the built in
XML database system that will soon be used in
an actual grant.  While I guess that's not
technically "commercial" I did get paid to
do it.  (I'll release the code when it's
stable).

As to the other questions, BlueBottle development
is currently driven mostly by the accademics
although the source is freely available.  There's
just currently no really good way to fold your
changes/improvements back into the system.
